Wow -- how silly.
I pulled on the buttons and the plastic covers come right off. I had been too timid to exert so much pulling force on them until now, but indeed the plastic covers to the knobs slide right off.
Amazingly, once the plastic cover to the power on/off button was removed, I pressed the underlying metal button and the guitar turned on! I guess the plastic cover was obstructing the button from being fully depressed. Everything works; the guitar now turns on and off easily... Thanks.
