Personally I own 2 Yamaha guitars and 1 Bass.
As a gigging Bassist although not so intense now I used a TRB1006 it was bought to replace another make where the bass had become a nightmare turning wise.
The TRB did serv as my main bass for a number of years. In the time I have had failures one was a battery only replaced a few days later went flat at a sound check. This was later solved by the late but very great Dave Roper from Suffolk. A simple mod and
enlargement of the battery cavity and it was no longer a issue. How many people had same issue a few times and sold the bass on never to return to the brand.
The other issue was a tuner broke for the E string about 3 numbers into a gig. I ordered better tuners problem solved.
However the thing I can't solve is it reacts quite badly when in the interval of a real hot sweaty gig the tuning as a whole goes way off. I retune at the start of the set and then have to re adjust maybe 2 or 3 times as the temperature and humidity change. I still have the Bass but it's a never used spare for a ESP D5 I bought as a backup when I started gigging again this has behaved like you expect a reliable stable easy to play tool and I'd buy another of if we stated gigging more regularly again.
The Pacifica 311H I bought just to have a guitar after selling a PRS McCarty. This has been utterly reliable needed no setups and played well and stays in tune.
My SG1820 I bought new from a local ish store was quite well setup from new by them. However I kept getting issues with the G string tuning and got it setup by a local Luithier who found 2 high frets which he leveled. Guitar plays much better but still G string and other strings have nut related issues. Now I can say I'm sure it could be rectified with more money and time but the satisfaction is waiting.
The Mcarty played stayed in tune. Was more consistent out of the case after maybe 2 or 3 days. However the Yamaha has better sustain tone and to a degree a nicer neck for my old hands.
I am looking at a nice present to me next year for my big 60 and probably the last guitar I'll buy.
I enquired about a Yamaha custom shop SG2000 but never got a reply.
I wonder if I contact PRS what reply I'd get.
If Yamaha want to get the backing of large names they need to truly up their high end consistency. If Santana can pick a guitar from the factory or off the store stock and go and gig that night the same level of confidence needs to be associated with Yam
aha guitars and basses.
I will say years back I had a Ampeg Bass amp I bought used from a name turing band and needed a new 5 way switch. The UK importer really was useless no reply at all. Ampeg US went out of their way to help air mailing a replacement and a spare in just 3 or 4 days for free - I can't rate that level of help highly enough.
So if Yamaha want to get their profile and reputation to where it should be then spare parts need to be swiftly sent out. I like most musicians carry spare basses, amps and often 2 cabs to gigs to deliver a good show. But I can't afford to then have to buy another bass amp or guitar to keep gigging until I can repair what becomes an expensive toy.
