The EX5 was also released at the dawn of mass internet usage, and Yamaha got well and truly flamed for some of the flaws, which stung them. If you look at the product range at the time, which included: EX5, AN1x, FS1r, VL70m there was true innovation at the time in terms of sound engines, and then pretty much a focus on AWM only on the Motif range (yes, you could add PLG cards in earlier models, but they were also a flawed concept!)
It's why I jumped ship to the Korg Kronos in 2014, which still remains one of my favourite synths, to get a modern take on the multi-engine concept.
I am of course pleased to see the Montage slowly getting back into the multi engine game: AWM2, FM-X and now AN-X.
