During a jazz tour of Austria Schifrin was asked why he had written the Mission: Impossible tune in 5/4 time. Answering with a straight face he explained that the US government had recently found an extra-terrestrial being that needed his assistance. “The people in outer space have five legs and couldn’t dance to our music, so I wrote this for them,” he told them. Later he told how “the reporter believed it and all the magazines in Vienna published it. My agents called and said, ‘What the hell are you trying to do?’”
