I tried but could not find a combination where the CVP can send the variation change with auto fill in to SX920 with one button push as it happens locally

I have no idea how to send MIDI commands, but maybe "auto fill-in" works in the similar way as registrations. If registration calls/changes variation, then there will be no fill-in (even if AUTO FILL-IN button is on).
To get fill-in, registration needs to call/execute the desired "fill-in". In this case, after fill-in is played, it will automatically continue with the belonging variation.

Just thinking aloud here..
