Match? The modx sample is *miles* ahead of the DGX...? VRM isn't the end all be all; let you in on a secret: it can be overdone. Which is why the CLP645 sounded better than the 745, and why the CVP705/CSP170/PS500 piano all sounds better than the CLp745/P515/P525 pianos (the CVP705/CSP170 do have VRM, but a different iteration. The 2nd one, the 3rd one (used in the CLP700 series and the CVP909) was *too* heavy, and distractingly put in a *positive* DSP feedback loop (which anyone who knows about DSPs knows that's bad).Hi ChegsKey --
Welcome to the Forum!
Lackluster piano sound comes up often in discussions. Hopefully, you've search for other threads.
Have you tried tweaking touch sensitivity, EQ, delay? One studio trick to thicken an acoustic piano is to add a short delay to the effect chain.
A tweaked MODX8+ should be able to match a P-125 or DGX-670. The GHS actions are mostly the same across models and neither the P-125 or DGX-670 have better piano samples.
Just a few thoughts, here -- pj
The net result? The CVP809/CLP685 CFX grand sounded cleaner and crisper than the CVP909/CLP785 (I was even briefly able to A/B both and prove it to customers). Luckily, they've learned, and toned down the 4th gen VRM in the CLP875 (so it actually sounds better than the CLP775).
The P125 piano is very diferrent from the DGX670's (and while thicker, not as expressive. A *lot* less expressive than the DGX, in fact)
And yes the Modx/+/Montage piano (performance made up of 4 different components) is one of the best on Yamaha, but they Modx/Montage plastic keys are just ok. Montage 8/M8x keys are nicer than fatar, but still nowhere nearly as good as the P515/CP88/CLP645/CSP170 keys. But the weighted action will let the piano behavior on the montage/modx respond more correctly.
I know you want the DGX to be the be all and end all, and for the money, it's *really* good. But I warn everyone about its flaws as well. Speaker crackle at full volume, no proper line outs, and the piano sample isn't bad, but both the sample and keys are miles behind the PS500 & Montage.
Oh, and one of my favourite portable stage piano samples isn't even a Yamaha: Roland's RD88 sounds spectacular. I just wish they'd paired it with wooden or wood hybrid keys. At least they're not the really slow short keys from the FP10/30
Chegs, if you're disappointed in the wonderful Modx8+, i'm guessing you're likely running it though a keyboard amp or relatively non-flat frequecy response PA system. Try it through headhpones. No, the keys aren't the best (Yamaha has many different grades of keys, and the Modx & DGX get their entry level weighted keys... which ironically are still better than half the keys from other brands). You might also want to change the response to light to make them feel heavier (i know, ironic!)
