Yamaha MODX and MODX+ Forum • Re: Yamaha MODX vs MODX+ sound quality differences

I have both the flagship arranger Genos 2 and a MODX+. I have both keyboards feeding into a mixer with the output going to my speakers, including a sub. My computer can switch seamlessly between sending audio to either keyboard over USB. I also have a Focustrite audio interface that goes to two KRK 5" studio monitors. When I play audio through the Focusrite, the sound is much different than the sound I get through the keyboards and mixer. I attribute that to a difference in speakers. When I switch between the Genos2 and the MODX+, I can hear no difference in the sound quality.

Admittedly, the initial sound quality of the default pianos is rather weak, but this seems to be the case with the MODX, MODX+, Montage, Genos and Genos2. It is not confined to a specific keyboard. This can be be fixed by adjusting the velocity settings. On the MODX/MODX+ open up the performance settings and adjust the velocity offset to a higher value. This will significantly increase the volume of the piano sound. Unfortunately, you cannot change the default piano in memory; but you can save the altered piano to a new performance in user memory. Simply use the saved performance rather than the default. While I would have preferred to have a more robust set of default pianos, you can modify things to your liking.
